WARNING TO TOURISTS: TERRORISM IN ATHENS, VISIT AT THE RISK OF YOUR LIFE

SY.RI.ZA. actively supports groups of anarchists who burnt bookshops in the centre of Athens during the months of June and July 2008. Why do they prohibit freedom of speech in a violent manner? Didn't Adolf Hitler do the same in the 30's? Are we to suppose that SY.RI.ZA. are the new fascists since their employ the Nazi's methods of "persuasion"?

A hood wearing group of 30 people removed owners and customers violently from the bookshops and after emptying gallons of gasoline lighted up and burnt the bookshops to the ground. This happened at midday Saturday in the centre of Athens !!! It is worth noting that the left parliamentary party SY.RI.ZA. actively supported the acts with an official announcement. In no other country in the world a parliamentary party would supposrt openly and therefore encourage further acts of terrorism.

The anarchists burnt the bookshops Pelasgos and Georgiades Books (05/06/2008), New Thesis (21/06/2008), Freedom of Thought (04/07/2008). All the above have a common thematic link selling books about ancient Greek history.

It looks like the vandals are disturbed about the revived interest of the public in ancient Greek history & culture and hoped that by destroying them completely that interest will cease. Most importantly the bookshop of Georgiades books has been burnt for the 13th time in a row with the Athenian police & Government doing nothing to stop the vandals.

ΤΑ ΒΙΒΛΙΑ (ελεύθερα επιλέγονται και) ΔΙΑΒΑΖΟΝΤΑΙ, ΔΕΝ ΚΑΙΓΟΝΤΑΙ

Κύριοι συνάδελφοι,

Στις 5 Ιουνίου 2008 μία ομάδα περίπου τριάντα κουκουλοφόρων επέδραμαν στις 7.30 το απόγευμα στο βιβλιοπωλείο μου, στην οδό Χαριλάου Τρικούπη 14, τη στιγμή που βρισκόμουν μέσα με έναν πελάτη, μας απομάκρυναν βιαίως και εν συνεχεία το πυρπόλησαν και το κατέστρεψαν ολοσχερώς. Στην συνέχεια πήγαν και κατέστρεψαν και το βιβλιο?πωλείο των Εκδόσεων Γεωργιάδη.

Στις 21 Ιουνίου ακολούθησε ο εμπρησμός των εκδόσεων Νέα Θέσεις του Γιάννη Σχοινά, για να φθάσουμε στις 4 Ιουλίου στον εμπρησμό της Ελεύθερης Σκέψις.

Με λίγα λόγια σε ένα μήνα κατεστράφησαν ΤΕΣΣΕΡΑ βιβλιοπωλεία με δεκάδες χιλιάδες βιβλία, στο κέντρο της Αθήνας. Οι ιδιοκτήτες των επιχειρήσεων αυτών είναι μέλη του Συνδέσμου Εκδοτών Βιβλίου ή του Συλλόγου Εκδοτών – Βιβλιοπωλών Αθηνών ή και των δυο (όπως εγώ).

Εδώ λοιπόν προκύπτουν καίρια ερωτήματα:

ΓΙΑΤΙ ΣΙΩΠΟΥΝ ΟΙ ΣΥΝΔΙΚΑΛΙΣΤΙΚΟΙ ΜΑΣ ΦΟΡΕΙΣ;

ΓΙΑΤΙ ΔΕΝ ΚΑΤΑΔΙΚΑΣΑΝ ΤΟ ΚΑΨΙΜΟ ΤΕΣΣΑΡΩΝ ΒΙΒΛΙΟΠΩΛΕΙΩΝ ΚΑΙ ΔΕΚΑΔΩΝ ΧΙΛΙΑΔΩΝ ΒΙΒΛΙΩΝ; ΜΗΠΩΣ ΣΥΜΦΩΝΟΥΝ ΜΕ ΤΗΝ ΔΡΑΣΤΗΡΙΟ?ΤΗΤΑ ΤΩΝ ΚΟΥ?ΚΟΥΛΟΦΟΡΩΝ;

Κύριοι συνάδελφοι,

Λυπάμαι που θα το πω αλλά οι συνάδελφοι μας που βρίσκονται στις διοικήσεις των συνδικαλι?στικών μας φορέων είναι ΑΝΑΞΙΟΙ να εκπροσωπούν ένα χώρο πνεύματος και ελευθερίας.

Είναι δυνατόν το 2008 να καίγονται βιβλία και οι «αρμόδιοι φορείς» να ΣΙΩΠΟΥΝ;

Την παρουσία τους την αντιλαμβανόμαστε μόνο όταν ποικιλοτρόπως ενημερωνό?μαστε για τις κατηγορίες μεταξύ τους για υπεξαιρέσεις και συκοφαντίες. ΕΥΓΕ ΛΕΒΕΝΤΕΣ του ΠΝΕΥΜΑΤΟΣ και της ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑΣ, σκέτη ΑΠΑΓΟΗΤΕΥΣΗ είστε.

Η σιωπή είναι συνενοχή και οι «διοικήσεις» των σωματείων μας, φορούν την κουκούλα της υποκρισίας και της αντιδημοκρατικότητας.

Κύριοι συνάδελφοι,

Ζητώ από εσάς τους «φορείς του πνεύματος» να καταδικάσετε την δραστηριότητα των ταγμάτων εφόδου της νέας τάξης που καίει βιβλία σήμερα, ΑΚΡΙΒΩΣ όπως άλλοι έπραξαν στο μεσοπόλεμο, σε ανατολή και δύση.

Η συνύπαρξη ΙΔΕΩΝ και ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΙΑΣ είναι βασικός κανόνας πολιτικού πολιτισμού.

Ζητώ λοιπόν, να κάνετε το χρέος σας, πριν η τυφλή βία της ανελευθερίας και της μισαλλο?δοξίας, που ΕΣΕΙΣ με την στάση σας εκκολάπτετε, φθάσει και στην δικιά σας πόρτα.

Σκεφθείτε έτσι τον δικό σας κόπο ζωής.

ΥΓ. Θέλω όμως να ΕΥΧΑΡΙΣΤΗΣΩ ΟΛΟΨΥΧΑ τους Συναδέλφους εκείνους (μη συνδικαλιστές) που έσπευσαν να μου συμπαρασταθούν, ηθικά και υλικά, πέρα από κόμματα και βιώματα, απλά Ανθρώπινα και Συναδελφικά.

Academic boycotts

In relation to the debate about academic boycott and freedom,1 2 it seems relevant to record another way in which the refusal to address the voluminous and independent evidence of medical ethical violations in Israel is being maintained.

The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) has lately been under attack. Months ago, I was invited to speak at an RSM conference on religion, spirituality and mental health, to contribute to a session on the role of health professionals in conflict situations. As a reflection of my research interests and publications on medical ethics since 1992, my main case study was on Israel and Palestine. Once the conference was publicised, the RSM became subject to pressure from pro-Israel doctors to remove me from the conference programme. They went so far as to threaten a challenge to the RSM constitution as a charity if a "political" (and biased) person were permitted to speak.

After weeks of this, to save the conference the RSM asked me to withdraw. But, in the end the RSM steeled itself and decided to go ahead, and the conference was held on 9 October.

The editors of UK medical journals publishing human rights material on the Occupied Palestinian Territories have been subject to comparable pressures; in the US pro-Israel groups are hounding (and effectively) individual academics, conferences, publishers, and universities. These ominous developments recall the era of McCarthyism.
